How to read the savings

The ranges come from insurers' own discount pages and published industry figures, linked below. They are what the discount typically takes off the part of the premium it applies to. Some apply only to certain coverages, and every insurer caps how much you can stack.

That's why we don't add the percentages up. Discounts multiply: two 10% discounts take off 19%, not 20%. The combined figure we show does that math. Insurers don't publish how far discounts can stack, so we also cap it at 40%. That cap is our own conservative assumption, not a published rule. Discounts that apply to only part of the premium, like anti-theft on comprehensive cover, are listed but left out of the total.

Not every insurer offers every discount, and a few states require some by law. If your insurer doesn't offer one you qualify for, that's a good reason to compare.
