Methodology

How Critic Farm actually works.

Most comparison sites explain their process in a sentence and their business model nowhere. We'd rather over-explain both, since trusting a stranger's opinion about your insurance is a reasonable thing to be skeptical of.

1. The state reports

Every state page starts from that state's actual minimum coverage law — the liability limits, whether it's an at-fault or no-fault system, and whether uninsured motorist coverage is required. We source these from state statutes and insurance department guidance, and we flag anywhere our confidence is lower than usual so you know to double-check before relying on it. Rate ranges shown on state pages are illustrative estimates, not live quotes — insurance pricing is too personal (your record, your ZIP code, your car) for a single number to mean much.

2. The tools

The cost calculator, coverage calculator, state-minimum lookup, and discount finder run entirely in your browser. They're built to be useful on their own, whether or not you ever use our matching tool — that's a deliberate choice, not an accident. We'd rather earn a return visit than gate a basic calculation behind an email address.

3. The reviews

Our carrier scores are Critic Farm's own editorial assessment across four dimensions — price competitiveness, claims experience, digital tools, and coverage flexibility — based on each company's publicly known characteristics, structure, and reputation. We are not a scientific survey and we don't claim to be J.D. Power or A.M. Best. Where we're not confident about a claim, we phrase it as a general reputation, not a hard statistic. Read the disclaimer on any individual review for specifics.

4. The matching tool — and how we make money

This is the part most sites bury. Critic Farm is not an insurance company, agent, or broker. Our matching tool asks about your state, driving profile, vehicle, and coverage needs, then shows you which types of coverage and which carriers are generally a reasonable fit. If you choose to continue, your information may be shared with licensed insurance carriers, agents, brokers, or affiliate partners so they can follow up with an actual quote — and some of those partners compensate us for the introduction. You're never charged for this, and continuing past the results screen is always optional.

Full disclosure

The complete, plain-language version of this is in our Advertiser & Data Disclosure. Our Privacy Policy covers exactly what we collect and how it's stored.

5. What keeps this honest

  • We publish the scoring dimensions, not just the scores.
  • We disclose the business model instead of hiding it in a footer link nobody clicks.
  • Our free tools work whether or not you ever give us your contact information.
  • We'd rather say "we're not sure" on a data point than invent a number that sounds precise.
